Quick guide
The advice we would give anyone setting sail for the first time. The full guides come after.
The first hours
- Follow the port quests: they teach the game in the right order and pay for your first real ship.
- Do not hoard gold for its own sake. Better ammunition and one more cannon pay off more than any savings early on.
- Sinking is part of it. Repairs cost gold, not levels. Just watch out on the open sea: there, an installed gold weapon can be lost when you sink. Diamond weapons are never lost.
Choosing a ship
- Each hull has a number of cannon and harpoon slots. That, more than hit points, is what decides your damage.
- Cannons work against ships; harpoons against creatures. Firing the wrong family warns you on screen and wastes the salvo.
- A big hull with weak guns loses to a well-armed medium one. Buy weapons before you buy ships.
Surviving the open sea
- When you set sail from port, the Harbor Mist hides your ship for fifteen seconds. When you arrive in a captain-combat sea, you get thirty seconds invisible. Use them to read the map, not to aim.
- Your first shot ends the invisibility. Fire when you already know where you are running to.
- Groups and friends cannot hit each other. Sailing with company is the cheapest defence there is.
