The sea

The harbors, the harbor mist, the whirlpools, the wrecks and the moon: what every sailor knows and nobody ever wrote down.

I

The harbors

There are 30 harbors across the world, and they all have the same doors: the shop, the shipyard, the master armorer's workshop, the tavern and the harbor office. Quests come from the boatswain, who knows every rock in that sea. Hulls get mended at the shipyard. And the harbor master is the one who sends idle ships out on voyages.

But a harbor is no shelter. Right up to the last metre before the quay the sea is still the sea, and only those who can keep the peace for a few seconds get to dock.

II

The harbor mist

Every harbor breathes out a low mist when a ship sets sail. Sailors call it the land's last kindness: for a few seconds, nobody can see who is leaving. The first shot clears the mist. That is why seasoned captains leave port quietly.

III

The whirlpools

Four whirlpools turn in far corners of the world: at Arquipélago das Conchas, Ilhas do Cravo, Passagem dos Alísios and Mata das Brumas. The old ones found out they are linked underwater, and that the sea lets through whoever pays the right toll: one Concha do Redemoinho, the whirlpool shell, per jump. Nobody knows who first collected it. Everybody knows it is better not to owe it.

Whoever crosses comes out the other side wrapped in mist, and only goes where they have been before. The whirlpool takes nobody to a sea they have never seen.

IV

The wrecks

The seabed is an archive. The harbors' divers go down to sunken hulls and come up with gold, fittings and, every so often, a scrap of torn chart. Put the four pieces of a map together and it leads to places on no map at all: Enseada Escondida, where treasure waits behind waves of enemies and guardians, or Cemitério de Cascos, where you have to hold out to the end to take the chest.

V

The full moon

The sea answers to the moon, and so do captains. On the real full moon, the one in the sky and not the one on the calendar, the Moon Auction opens, where the red moon hunters' parts and ship change hands for diamonds. Whoever wants the hunters' ship looks at the sky before looking at the strongbox.
