Where it applies
Every sea has its own rule for captains fighting each other, and the sea's name on the map tells you which one applies:
- No fighting between captains: seas 1 to 7 (Baía das Salinas to Arquipélago das Conchas). Only sea ships and monsters attack you there.
- Limited combat: Lagoa dos Papagaios (up to 3 levels apart), Costa do Âmbar (up to 4 levels apart), Manguezal Alto (up to 5 levels apart) and Agulhas de Basalto (up to 6 levels apart). Only captains of similar level can fight.
- Open combat: from sea 12 (Baía do Farelhão) to the end of the world, with no level limit.
At sea, you never hit people in your group or your friends, and they never hit you. The arena, battlegrounds and duels have their own rules and don't count for anything on this page.
Arrival protection
Anyone entering a combat sea, through a passage or out of port, stays invisible to other captains for 30 s. The first shot ends the protection, and while it lasts you can't pick up chests either. Sinking a protected captain earns you nothing.
Tip: Use those seconds to check the map and pick your route. Don't fire until you know where you'll run to.
Skulls
Sinking another captain at sea earns you skulls, 4 to 14, depending on the size of the hull you sank. Level doesn't matter. Only your first sink of each captain per day pays out, and the captain you sank loses 50% of what you got, never more than they have.
Skulls can't be bought, traded or sold. They're a fighter's currency, and you can only spend them in the Skull shop.
Ranks
Your rank goes up and down with combat points, not skulls. Each captain you sink is worth 100 points, plus 20 for every rank they sit above you (and less if they're below). The captain you sank loses 50% of what you earned, and the same first-sink-of-the-day rule applies. There are 20 ranks, and the insignia always shows above your name at sea:
- Marinheiro
- 0 points
- Grumete
- 200 points
- Cadete
- 800 points
- Sub-oficial
- 1,800 points
- Sub-tenente
- 3,100 points
- Tenente
- 4,900 points
- 1º Tenente
- 7,000 points
- Comandante
- 9,600 points
- Capitão
- 12,500 points
- Capitão de Fragata
- 15,800 points
- Comodoro
- 19,500 points
- Mestre do Sabre
- 23,600 points
- Bucaneiro
- 28,100 points
- Flibusteiro
- 33,000 points
- Tenente-corsário
- 38,300 points
- Corsário
- 43,900 points
- Leão do Mar
- 50,000 points
The 3 highest ranks take more than points. They go to the top places of the open-sea ranking, among captains with at least 50,000 points: Demônio dos Mares (top 10), Terror dos Mares (top 5) and Pirata Infame (first place). The table is under Rankings.
The Skull shop
You'll find it in the Arena window, under the Skulls tab, and you buy in port. It doesn't ask for a rank and takes no gold or diamonds, only skulls. It sells 6 hulls you can't get anywhere else and 35 battle items, some of them among the strongest in the game.
What is at stake
Getting sunk by another captain costs skulls and points, as covered above. Everything else works like any sinking at sea. You lose no gold, your hull and parts stay with you, and each installed gold weapon has a 5% to 30% chance to break. Diamond weapons never break. More in the combat guide.
Tip: In the open seas, sail with a group. A lone captain with half a hull left is exactly who skull hunters go looking for.
